What is PIS?

When simplified, PIS is equivalent to the acronym for Social Integration Program. Thus, private companies must make a monthly contribution to the fund linked to their employees.

Thus, as the objective, a better distribution of income for workers who receive lower wages.

Nowadays, PIS contributions (in the same way as PASEP) are destined to the Fundo de Amparo ao Trabalhador (FAT).

In addition, the fund pays for programs such as Seguro Desemprego and Abono Salarial, just as it finances the Economic Development Programs through the BNDES.

In general, it is the contributions collected by companies that are transformed into benefits for low-income workers in the private sector.

Who is entitled to PIS/PASEP?

In short, to be entitled to the PIS/PASEP wage bonus, the worker must meet the following requirements:

  • Have performed paid work for a legal entity for at least 30 days in the base year considered for calculating the benefit. For the purposes of entitlement to the benefit, these 30 days worked may or may not be consecutive.
  • Have been registered with the PIS/PASEP for at least five years;
  • During the base year for calculating the benefit, the worker must have received up to two average minimum wages in remuneration;
  • The worker's data must be correctly informed by the employer in the RAIS (Annual List of Social Information) or in the eSocial.

How to know the PIS value?

At first, the PIS payment could reach a minimum wage that in 2023 is R$1,302. In addition, there was an expectation of raising the minimum wage to R$1320, as would be the new government's wish, however, due to budgetary problems, it was established at R$1,302.

Therefore, the value of PIS will vary according to the number of months worked. Therefore, only those who worked the 12 months of a reference year to pay the allowance will receive the full amount.

How to check the PIS?

In short, every worker has a PIS or PASEP number. Thus, in the case of the PIS, this number will be the same as the NIS (Social Identification Number) and the NIT (Worker Identification Number).

In addition, the worker can find these numbers in the following documents:

  • Statement from the Severance Indemnity Fund (FGTS;
  • Workbook;
  • Citizen Card and CEF agency, as well as RG and CPF (for PIS).

Incidentally, on the CNIS website (National Social Information Register) there is also the possibility of obtaining the PIS number. In that case, the step by step will be as follows:

First, access the CNIS website and proceed by selecting the “Citizen” option. In the upper left corner, the “Registration” tab will appear. Clicking on it will open the “Affiliated” option, which you must also click on.

So, fill in the personal information requested in the field (full name, date of birth, mother's name and CPF). When you continue with “continue”, a lilac banner will appear with your NIT number in red.
