In fact, every worker, whether working for a private company or a public employee, receives a number referring to his PIS/PASEP.

Both are salary allowances made up of deposits from private companies and public bodies into a fund intended for employees.

However, despite being very popular among Brazilians, it is common for many to know little information regarding various details of the benefit. Therefore, if you want to know more and understand once and for all, keep reading and check out the article below.

What exactly is PIS?

In principle, PIS is equivalent to the Social Integration Program, aimed at private sector workers. The purpose of the PIS corresponds to financing the payment of unemployment insurance, bonuses and participation in the revenue of private companies. Therefore, who makes the payment of these resources is the Caixa Econômica Federal.

However, many question a lot about the acronym PASEP, which appears generally related to PIS. Basically, PASEP means Public Servant Asset Formation Program.

Incidentally, the purpose of this program is the same as the PIS, however, those responsible for the deposit are public bodies and companies, in addition to the administration carried out by Banco do Brasil.

After all, the two programs were created under different laws and situations, but in 1975, Complementary Law No. 26 unified the two programs and thus, the PIS/PASEP Fund was formed.

Who is entitled to PIS/PASEP?

In short, only workers who comply with the regulations of both programs receive the benefit. However, remember that there are requirements.

How to consult the PIS/PASEP

In principle, every worker has a PIS or PASEP number. Thus, in the case of PIS, this number will be the same as the NIS (Social Identification Number) and NIT (Worker Identification Number).

Incidentally, the worker can also find these numbers in the following documents:

  • extract from the Severance Indemnity Fund (FGTS);
  • work card;
  • CEF citizen and agency card, with RG and CPF (for PIS).

On the CNIS website (National Social Information Register) it will be possible to obtain the PIS or PASEP number. So, if that's the case, see step by step below:

  • First, access the official CNIS website and select the “Citizen” icon;
  • In the upper left corner, the “Registration” tab will appear. Clicking on it will open the “Affiliate” option, which you should also click on;
  • Then fill in the personal information requested in this field (full name, mother's name, CPF and date of birth);
  • Thus, when clicking on “continue”, a lilac banner will appear with your NIT number in red. This will be your PIS or PASEP number.

In the case of PIS, the consultation must be carried out in the following ways:

  • in the Caixa Trabalhador app;
  • on the CEF website (caixa.gov.br/PIS), click on the “consult payment” option;
  • by calling the CEF call center (0800 726 0207);
